Sentmine
Free · English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and more · Chrome, Brave and Edge

Learn languages with what you already watch

Sentmine shows dual subtitles (the language you are learning and your own) over YouTube, Netflix, HBO Max and Gaia, lets you look up any word with the mouse, explains with AI what a sentence means in its scene, and turns it into an Anki card, with its exact audio, at the press of a shortcut.

What it does

Dual subtitles

The language you are learning and your own at the same time, over the video (YouTube, HBO Max, Gaia) or in a panel below it (Netflix). You choose the look, the size and which line to show.

AI explanation

“Explain in context” tells you what the sentence means in that scene: the natural translation, idioms, grammar and how the word is used. It works with your account (free, with a daily limit) and the explanation is saved in the Anki card.

Your language and the one you learn

English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish or Indonesian as the language you learn, translated into your language. Phrasal verbs are only available for English.

Dictionary on hover

Translation, definition and IPA for every word. Mark it as learning, known or skipped and your vocabulary is highlighted in the subtitles.

Sentence-by-sentence control

Previous or next line, repeat, loop, auto-pause at the end of each sentence and speed, from the keyboard. A power button in the player’s own control bar turns Sentmine on and off.

Direct Anki cards

One shortcut sends Anki the sentence, the translation, the key word, the source with a link and the exact audio clip. No exporting or importing files.

Phrasal verbs

Sentmine recognises phrasal verbs (give up, turn the lights off, look forward to…), also conjugated and with the object in the middle. It underlines them, gives their meaning like any other word, and you can mine them to Anki.

Mine a single word

You know the sentence but not one word? Mine just that word: it reaches Anki with its pronunciation, a picture, its translation and definition, and the sentence where it appeared as context.

You decide where cards go

A deck for each YouTube video and each Netflix series or episode, or always the same deck you choose. From the extension icon you see your Anki decks and create a new one.

Statistics and sync

Your history, your streak and your vocabulary. With an optional account (no password) they sync between devices.

How to use it

  1. Install the extension and open Anki

Anki must be open with the AnkiConnect add-on. The manual explains it step by step.

  2. Watch a video in English

Press Z (or the power button in the player) to turn Sentmine on: it always starts off. The dual subtitles appear; hover a word to see what it means.

  3. Press Alt+Shift+M

The sentence, its translation and its audio reach Anki as a card ready to study. If you only want one word, press “Mine this word” in the dictionary.

Free, AI included

Sentmine is free: dual subtitles, dictionary, Anki cards, statistics and sync have no limits. AI explanations are free with an account, up to 10 a day. For people who use them a lot, a Premium plan at $7 USD a month with 600 explanations a month is coming: it covers what the AI costs. It is not available yet.

If you would rather help keep the project going, you can also make a one-time contribution of $7 USD; it does not unlock anything.

Frequently asked questions

Which platforms does it work with?

YouTube, Netflix, HBO Max and Gaia. Prime Video, Disney+ and Crunchyroll are in testing: they are included, but we have not been able to verify them on those services yet, so they may fail.

Do I need Anki?

To mine cards, yes: desktop Anki open and the AnkiConnect add-on. Dual subtitles and the dictionary work without Anki.

What data does it collect?

Without an account, everything stays in your browser. With the AI, the line you ask about and the ones around it are sent to an AI service (Google Gemini) through our server. The privacy policy details what is sent and to whom.

Which languages can I learn?

English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish and Indonesian (languages with a Latin alphabet). The translation can go to any language in the Settings list.

Is the AI free?

Yes, with an account and up to 10 explanations a day. Premium (coming soon) will raise the limit to 600 a month for $7 a month.

What about mobile?

There is no mobile extension. Cards reach AnkiDroid or AnkiMobile by syncing Anki with AnkiWeb.
